A fence here fails from the bottom up. The same sun that pushes a roof surface past 160 degrees dries cedar and fades thin vinyl. Spring hail and straight line wind arrive between March and May, and hurricane season runs June through November. On the coast, in Brownsville, Los Fresnos and Port Isabel, salt air eats galvanized fittings first. Starr County soil adds caliche, which is what decides how fast the auger goes.

How is a fence priced in the Rio Grande Valley?
By the linear foot. We measure your line on the ground, count the gates separately and write both on the estimate. Height, material and ground conditions move the per foot number. A 6 foot cedar fence and a 4 foot chain link fence never land at the same price.
How long does a fence installation take?
Two days for about 150 linear feet of 6 foot privacy fence. Day one is layout, augering and setting posts in concrete. Day two is rails, pickets and gates, after the concrete has cured overnight. A ranch perimeter over half a mile can run two weeks.
Do I need a permit to build a fence at my house?
It depends on your city. Rio Grande City, Mission, McAllen and Brownsville each set their own height limits. Most cities also treat a front yard fence differently from a back yard fence. We check the rule for your address before we quote, and we pull what is required.
How deep do fence posts go in Valley soil?
Twenty four inches for a line post and 30 inches at gates and corners, all set in concrete. Caliche slows the auger down but holds a post well once it is set. Posts packed back with loose dirt are the single most common reason a fence leans within three years.
Who owns the fence between me and my neighbor?
Whoever pays for it, unless you and your neighbor agree in writing to share it. We set posts inside your property line so the fence stays yours. If the line is unclear, get a survey first. We build to the line you give us, and we do not decide where it falls.
Which fence lasts longest close to the coast?
Salt air in Brownsville, Los Fresnos, Port Isabel and South Padre Island attacks metal at the fasteners first. Vinyl and aluminum have nothing to rust. For chain link or iron near the water, pay for hot dip galvanized parts and a powder coat over them.
Do you take down and haul off the old fence?
Yes, and that includes digging out the old concrete footings, which is the part most quotes leave out. Old pickets, posts and wire leave in our trailer the same week. Your driveway does not become the staging area for the debris.
