A one-story contemporary home in gray stucco with stone-look panels, black window trim and a charcoal shingle hip roof. Wall sconces light the front, and a concrete walkway crosses a new lawn to the entry.

Marble-look porcelain tile runs through the house. The living room sits under a lit coffered ceiling, and the bedrooms and dining area carry black tray ceilings. The interior doors are black throughout.

The kitchen pairs black lower cabinets with white uppers, a long island with gold stools, and a pantry with black base cabinets. The primary bath has a gold-framed mirror, a makeup counter and a glass shower with a gold rain head.

What does a two-tone kitchen take to get right?

Two cabinet colors, gold hardware and a long island only look planned when every line and every gap is even. That is layout work, and it is the same work a kitchen remodel needs.
