Does vinyl fence fade or turn brittle in Valley sun?
Good vinyl does not, cheap vinyl does. The difference is titanium dioxide and UV inhibitor mixed into the material itself instead of coated on the surface. Panels without it go chalky and yellow on the south side within five or six summers here. The same panel lasts longer in Dallas.
Does a vinyl gate post need steel inside it?
Yes, on every gate. A gate hangs all its weight off one post and swings that weight twice a day. Hollow vinyl flexes under that and the gate stops latching within a season. A steel insert down the gate post, set in a 30 inch footing, is what keeps the opening square.
What happens to a vinyl fence in a hurricane or high wind?
A solid vinyl panel is a wall, so wind pushes on all of it. The panels are built to release from the routed rail before the post snaps. That is the cheap failure instead of the expensive one. After a storm, released pickets and rails can usually be reseated without new material.
How do you clean a vinyl fence?
A garden hose twice a year, and a soft brush with dish soap where the sprinkler leaves mineral spots. Do not use a pressure washer at close range, because it drives water into the post openings. That is the entire maintenance list for the life of the fence.
Does vinyl really cost less than wood over time?
It costs more the day it goes in and less after that. A cedar fence wants sealer every 2 to 3 years, which is about 7 rounds in 20 years. Boards get replaced along the way too. Vinyl in the same 20 years asks for a hose. Run both numbers before you decide.
