Does a lighter shingle color actually keep the house cooler?
A little, and less than people expect. Color changes the surface temperature more than the ceiling temperature. Attic airflow does the heavy work. A light shingle over a blocked soffit still leaves you a hot house in August.
What are the black streaks running down my shingles?
Algae, not dirt and not mold. It grows on the limestone filler in the shingle. It shows up first on the north slope, where the roof stays damp longer. It is cosmetic and it does not leak. Pressure washing takes granules off along with the stain.
Are three-tab shingles still worth buying here?
On a garage or a rental, sometimes. On a house, the gap has closed. Architectural shingle costs a little more per square. It carries a better wind rating and adds years in this heat. Most owners who pick three-tab to save end up re-roofing sooner.
Will an impact rated shingle lower my insurance premium?
It can. Some carriers in Texas give a credit for a class 4 rated roof and others do not. Ask your agent in writing before you pay for the upgrade. Keep the product certificate we hand you, because that is the document they ask for.
How do I know the crew used six nails and not four?
Ask for the photos. We shoot the nailing on each slope before the next course covers it, and those images go in your file. Four nails placed high is the cheapest way to shave a bid. It is invisible the day the job ends.
Can you match shingles on an addition so both roofs read as one?
We get close by matching the product line first and the color second. An existing Valley roof has already faded, so the new section reads brighter for a season or two. Where the two meet, we weave the transition instead of leaving a hard line.
