A covered porch is framed into the house roof line, with a ceiling, posts and a finished floor. We build front and back porches 6 to 10 feet deep. Most take 6 to 9 working days, including the ceiling and the trim.

How deep does a covered porch need to be to actually use it?
Six feet is the working minimum. Under 6 feet you get shade but no room for a chair and a walkway. At 8 feet you can put two chairs and a small table and still open the front door. Ten feet is where a porch starts to feel like a room.
Can you match the new porch roof to my existing shingles?
Usually, if the roof is under about 8 years old and the product line still ships. Older roofs fade, so a perfect match is rare and a near match on a separate roof plane looks fine. If your roof is close to replacement, doing both at once solves the color problem.
Do you run electric for a ceiling fan on the porch?
We frame and block for the fan and run the boxes. The connection itself is done by a licensed electrician, and that line shows on your estimate as its own item. A fan is worth it here, because moving air is what makes shade usable in August.
Can a covered porch be added to a house with a low roof line?
Often yes, but the porch roof gets a shallower pitch and sometimes a separate beam instead of a ledger. What we will not do is tie in so low that the porch header lands below the door head. David checks the fascia height on the first visit and tells you straight.
Does a covered porch change my property taxes?
It can, because appraisal districts count covered improvements. We do not estimate taxes and we will not guess a number for you. Call the Starr, Hidalgo, Cameron or Willacy county appraisal district with the square footage before you build.
