The back room of my Pharr house was added later. Does it need different prep?

Usually yes, and not because of the material. That room sits on its own slab, poured years after the first one. The two move independently, so a floor glued straight across the seam cracks along it. We carry a joint through at that line, or we build a transition. Either way it gets decided before the tile is ordered.

We turned the garage into a bedroom. Can the same floor go in there?

Yes, once the slab is dealt with. A garage slab slopes toward where the door used to be, and it was probably never sealed. We test it for moisture and level the slope with a self leveling compound. Then we build up the threshold at the old opening. Skipping that is why a converted garage floor rocks under your foot.

Parts of my 1990s Pharr tile sound hollow underfoot. What does that mean?

The tile has let go of the thinset below it. It is rarely the whole floor. We tap out every square before quoting and mark what has debonded. A few loose tiles can be lifted and reset. A hollow field across a whole room comes out, because anything set over it fails the same way.
