Laminate is the floor the Valley climate punishes hardest. The core is pressed wood fiber, and pressed wood fiber drinks water. A slow leak under a dishwasher or a wet mop will swell the edges. We still install it in bedrooms and living rooms that stay cool and dry. We say no to bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Is laminate a bad idea in the Rio Grande Valley?
It is a bad idea in wet rooms and in houses that sit empty. In a bedroom or a living room with the air conditioning running, it lasts 10 to 15 years. We turn down laminate jobs for bathrooms and laundry rooms.
What does the AC rating mean when I shop for laminate?
It is an abrasion scale that runs from AC1 to AC5. AC3 covers bedrooms and living rooms in a home. AC4 holds up in a hallway or an entry. It is the rating worth paying for in a busy house.
What happens if water sits on a laminate seam?
The core soaks it up and the edge swells into a ridge you can feel. Drying the floor does not shrink it back, because the fiber has already expanded. That board has to be replaced, which is why we ask you to keep spares.
Can laminate go in a kitchen?
It can, with two conditions we put in writing. The dishwasher and the sink base get inspected first, and the perimeter gets sealed. If the room has ever flooded, we quote tile or vinyl plank instead.
Is laminate louder than vinyl plank?
Yes, over a slab. The core is harder and it rings a little, which is why we use a foam underlayment with every job. A 12 mm plank is noticeably quieter than an 8 mm plank.
