Hardwood Flooring in the Rio Grande Valley, TX
Ask for the wear layer thickness in millimeters before you buy. A 3 mm layer takes one sanding, and a 2 mm layer takes none.
We install engineered hardwood over concrete slabs across the Rio Grande Valley. Solid wood is rare here, because a slab gives nothing to nail to and the humidity moves the boards. An 800 square foot glue down floor takes 4 to 6 days, after 5 days of acclimation.
What the job includes02
What a flooring job with us includes
Wood and Valley humidity argue all year. A 5 inch solid plank gains or loses about 1/16 of an inch of width here. The swing runs from a dry February to a humid September. Multiply that across a room and you get gaps in winter and cupping in summer. Engineered boards move less, because the plywood core runs in alternating layers, and they glue straight to a slab.

- —Old flooring removed and the slab scraped clean of glue and thinset
- —Slab moisture measured with probes drilled into the concrete
- —Moisture control adhesive chosen to match the reading we get
- —Boards racked from three boxes at once, so the color runs even
- —Glue spread with the trowel notch the manufacturer calls for
- —Expansion space held at the walls and covered by the trim
- —Transitions at tile and carpet, and a reducer at the exterior door
- —The floor rolled and weighted at the edges until the adhesive grabs
- —Engineered wood worn through to the plywood along the traffic path
- —Boards cupping at the edges after a slab leak or a dishwasher line
- —Gaps between boards wide enough to catch a dime in February
- —A hollow sound in one area where the adhesive let go
- —Wood that stops at a doorway because the last job was never finished
- —Dark rings around the plant pots that no cleaner takes out

Which material holds up best in Valley weather?
| Material | Holds up because | Watch out for | Best for | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineered oak, 3 mm wear layer | A real oak surface that can be sanded once, over a stable plywood core | Costs more than laminate or vinyl for the same square footage | Living and dining rooms in houses kept cool year round | 25 to 30 years |
| Engineered oak, 2 mm wear layer | The lowest cost way into a real wood surface | Cannot be sanded, so a deep scratch means replacing the board | Bedrooms and formal rooms with light traffic | 15 to 20 years |
| Solid hardwood over a built up subfloor | Sands several times across its life and lasts for decades | Needs a nailing surface, which a slab does not give without plywood on top | Homes with a raised wood floor, which are rare in the Valley | 40 years or more |
| Wood look porcelain | Reads as plank and ignores humidity completely | Feels like tile, because it is tile | Anyone who wants wood in a kitchen, a bathroom or a rental | 25 years or more |
How we work this job04
How does the job actually run?
A written estimate before anything starts, a start date we commit to, and one person responsible from the first walkthrough to the last inspection.
- 01We test the slab before we quote woodProbes go into the concrete and read the humidity inside the slab. The adhesive datasheet sets the number we have to be under.Day 1
- 02The wood acclimates inside your houseBoxes sit in the room 5 to 7 days with the air conditioning running. Wood that skips this step moves after it is glued.Week 1
- 03Slab grinding and dry layoutWe grind old adhesive and high spots, then rack boards from three boxes so the color mixes. You see the mix before glue.Build
- 04Glue down and rollAdhesive goes down with the notch the maker calls for, and the floor gets rolled and weighted at the edges.Build
- 05Trim, transitions and care rulesWe set the transitions, put the trim back and go over the cleaning rules. No wet mopping, and felt pads under the furniture.Handover

Questions we get06
Questions homeowners ask us about this work
Can I put solid hardwood over my concrete slab?
Not directly, because solid wood has to be nailed to something. Building a plywood subfloor over the slab adds height and cost, and it traps any moisture below it. Engineered wood glues straight down, which is why nearly every wood floor here is engineered.
What makes engineered hardwood different from laminate?
The top of an engineered board is real sawn wood, usually 2 to 4 mm thick. Laminate has a printed photo layer over pressed fiber. You can sand a 3 mm engineered floor once, and you can never sand laminate.
How much does a wood floor move between winter and summer here?
A 5 inch solid plank changes about 1/16 of an inch in width across the year. That is why you see winter gaps and summer cupping in solid floors. Engineered boards hold their width because the core layers pull against each other.
Can an engineered floor be sanded and refinished later?
A 3 mm wear layer takes one sanding, sometimes two if the sander is careful. A 2 mm layer takes none. Ask for the wear layer thickness in millimeters before you buy, because the brochure often hides it.
Where does wood make sense in a Valley house?
Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and hallways in a house that stays air conditioned. Not bathrooms, not laundry rooms and not the room that opens onto the patio. For those we install porcelain that looks like plank.
