A standard 18 by 16 mesh stops mosquitoes, and a finer no see um mesh also cuts the small gnats. The finer mesh cuts airflow too, which matters in August. What actually lets bugs in is the gap, not the mesh. We check the door sweep, the corners and the bottom track before we call it done.

Should the porch tie into the house or stand on its own out in the yard?

On a deep San Benito lot that is a real choice, not a detail. Tied to the house, the new roof has to meet the eave and flash into it, and on the older frame houses downtown there is not much eave to meet. Standing free, it carries its own posts and footings and the size is set by the yard rather than by the roof line. We draw both before you pick one.
